How to Prepare for your New Kitten

Puppy Picture

Preparing for your new kitten should be a fun experience. The steps below should be performed to make sure you will have a happy and healthy kitten.

Here is a quick check list to prepare your home:

  • Litter boxes- There should be 2 litter boxes for every 1 cat in the household. For example: 2 cats need 3 litter boxes.
  • Scratching post- Acquire a good scratching post to give your kitten an appropriate area to scratch.  This will help preserve your furniture.
  • Parasite prevention: Heartworm and flea/tick prevention should be started at 4 months of age.
  • Kitten proof your home, remove poisonous plants and other dangers from the house (See: The most common cat diseases and prevention).

Check list for your veterinarian to perform:

  • Full physical exam
  • Felv/FIV test at first visit
  • Fecal or deworming
  • Vaccinations:FVRCP at 8, 12, 16 weeks  and Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks
  • Felv vaccine at 12 and 16 weeks if going outdoors
  • OHE/Neuter- - 5-6 months old, this is because kittens lose their teeth at 5-6 months of age.
  • Heartworm test at 12 weeks or older
