What do I need to know about my new Puppy?

Puppy Picture

Getting a new puppy can be a joyous occasion but a big responsibility as well.  There are certain precautions that should be taken to prevent puppies from becoming ill. Vaccinating and deworming your new puppy is very important in preventing diseases and sickness.  Below are some common questions about what steps and age your puppy can be treated.

What Vaccinations do I need to keep my new puppy safe?

All puppies should receive vaccinations at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks of age.  Then repeat the vaccinations at 1 year of age.

**Beware- Vaccines given before 8 weeks of age should not be considered effective, since the puppies immune system is not developed enough to recognize the vaccines.**

What vaccinations are important for my puppy?

DHLPP or DHPP- " 5 way" - Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo, Parainfluenza; with or without Leptospirosis - Given at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks, 1 year and then every 1-3 years.

Rabies- Given at 4 months of age, repeated at 1 year and then every 1-3 years.

What other treatments should my puppy receive?

Every puppy should be dewormed with pyrantel to get rid of hookworms, tapeworms and roundworms. The first dose may be given at 6 or 8 weeks of age and repeated in 2 weeks.

Every puppy should also be started on flea and heartworm preventatives. (More information on parasites and medications)
